Updated: Mar 6, 2022

A determiner is a grammatical word used before the noun to identify the noun/s in question. They also help us understand who the noun might belong to or how many there are. Determiners fall into four categories (articles, demonstratives, possessives, and quantifiers).

The impact of determiners

Using Determiners in the correct way can make a huge difference in the way people perceive you. Students can sound more professional by altering just one word. This will in turn broaden a student's opportunities socially and professionally. With that being said, most students sign up for this very reason.

A level 1 ESL student will often use determiners incorrectly as they might not be found in their home language. To remedy this, teachers need to prepare for these moments by developing games and activities to make these determiners stick. Focus on one or two determiners at a time as these can get easily confused. It also shows the students that we are not bombarding them with everything all at once. Thus allowing them to grasp the grammar points easier. Once the students get to know the rules for each determiner they will be able to analyze the content of a sentence and use the correct determiner.
